Begin with the engineering conditions
Provide normal operation, minimum and maximum design temperatures, ambient conditions, pipe or equipment geometry and the project's performance criteria. A material family name alone does not establish suitability.
Hot-service priorities
Discuss heat loss, surface-temperature targets, thermal movement and the ability of the complete system to withstand service conditions. The approved design determines insulation type, thickness and fastening details.
Cold-service priorities
Discuss condensation control, vapour ingress, supports, joints and penetrations. The continuity of the vapour-control system is a design and installation issue as well as a materials issue.
Check the whole assembly
Insulation, adhesives, membranes, coatings, supports and cladding each have their own limits. Ask for the data of the actual proposed products and have the assembly reviewed against the approved specification.
This is a procurement checklist. Final material selection and system design should follow your engineer's specification and the selected manufacturer's current technical data.
